MARTIAL ARTS

“Martial arts or fighting arts are systems of codified practices and traditions of training for combat.” (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martial_arts). Martial arts are very interesting topics. We can learn histories, techniques, and functions of martial arts. One of martial art’s advantages is to defend ourselves because the techniques can train our ability to defend. The purpose of this essay is to introduce the kind of martial arts, like Muay Thai, Ju-Jitsu, Brazilian martial arts, wrestling, and sumo.

Muay Thai is a hard martial art from Thailand. In ancient time, Siamese soldiers that are an unarmed use Muay Thai. Actually, Muay Thai is for entertainments such as local festival, celebration at temple, and respect Thai’s king. Muay Thai’s techniques are emphasizing in elbow and knee. Ju-jitsu is unarmed and armed techniques from Japan. Ju-jitsu is also one of style that originated from the samurai. The key forms are practiced for hand-to-hand combat. Traditional ju-jitsu combined with some weapons, it shows a painful position. The techniques are locking arm, joint locks, throws, kicks, and strikes. However, Ju-jitsu more focuses in taking opponent down to the floor.

Brazilian martial arts are Capoeira and Brazilian Ju-jitsu. Capoeira is martial dance. Capoeira consists of music, dance, and athletic movements. The techniques are kicks, head butts, elbow strikes, sweeps. This martial art developed by African slaves in Brazil to protect themselves. The oldest version is “Capoeira Angola”. Brazilian Ju-jitsu is from Japan. It was from Mitsuyo Maeda that brought the martial art from Japan to Brazil and he taught his own techniques. The Gracie family is the pioneer of Ju-jitsu in Brazil. Wrestling etymology had three etymologies, such as the Mahabharata, the Epic of Gilgamesh, and Greek. Wrestling has international disciplines or we called non-folk style and folk style disciplines. Non-folk style disciplines are Greco-Roman, freestyle, submission, beach, and sambo. Folk style disciplines are a traditional form of wrestling unique and styles from Europe, England, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Siberia, Italy, Iran, India, Indonesia, Switzerland, China, Korea, and Turkish oil wrestling. Each country has different name of wrestling and techniques of wrestling.

Sumo is from Japan. It is a competitive contact sport and has many ritual elements. The Sumo wrestlers use salt purification to sign that they are already to fight. Some shrines have ritual dance for Sumo because sumo is associated with Shinto ritual. The wrestling ring has diameter 4, 55 meters and the area is 16, 26 square meters. At the center of the ring, there are two white lines. The Japan Sumo Association organizes Professional Sumo. Sumo wrestling has a strict hierarchy based on sporting merit.

Martial arts have unique form in each specification. Martial arts also used for ritual religion and entertainment. We have many advantages if we learn and practice a martial art. The advantages are efficient use of energy, utilizing your opponent’s momentum, system of self-defense, training effectively, improved our performance and safety. Life in the Theatre

By: Bernadetta Dyani Kusumadewi/081214030

Most of people now make theatre or play performance as an entertainment. It is something they consume, something they enjoy to get entertained. Theatre here is a performance which has a storyline and entertainment purposes for people who are going to enjoy it. The theatre player nowadays being a minority among us, I mean their number is decreasing. People start to leave their tradition of being a performer now, yah, our society actually have a tradition of making performance such as ketoprak, ludruk, and so on. They start to be the performance devotee and forget the story behind the performance itself which sometimes more interesting than what happens in front of the audience, at the stage. So here, this article is made to remind you about stories that happen behind the stage. I hope you can enjoy it and start to care about them again, the performance and the story behind it.

The first story I wanted to share to you is related to the performers, the players of the theatre. An actor can be called professional only if he can act professionally, I mean he can transform himself into a specialized character that he played and even forget about himself as acting to that character, suggest himself that he is that character, not himself then he could called a professional actor. Here is the first story; it is about the professionalism of actors in playing theatre, actors or players who died while he is acting on the stage. You must not believe this story; I did not believe it either at the first time I read the story. So there is an actor or actress who is died while he is acting or died after he is acting, or we can say that he is died because he is acting. For the example, please read this passage…

“It was while playing Othello to his son's (Charles Kean) Iago at Covent Garden, March 25, 1833, that Kean played his last rôle. Kean's financial condition at that time was as desperate as his physical state, so that he was compelled to once more brave an audience, no matter what the consequences might be. Arriving at the theatre, he immediately sent for his son, Charles, who found him in his dressing-room on the verge of collapse. "I am very ill, Charlie," he said, "I am afraid I shall be unable to act." But with the aid of stimulants and the encouragement of his manager he managed to get dressed for the part, and supported on his son's arms, he went down to the wings. The house was crowded to the doors and a salvo of applause greeted the old favorite, but Kean could only respond by feeble attempts at acting. His voice was weak and movements pitiful. After speaking the line, "Othello's occupation's gone," he sank exhausted into his son's arms and expired soon after.” (RENÉ WREN, PLAYERS WHO DIED ACTING: 8-10).

So, do you have any opinion about that? Anything you want to say about Charles Kean, the actor? Mr. Kean could easily cancel his performance because of his sickness actually, but, what did he do? He sacrificed his life to act on the stage, because so many workers depend on his act at that time. Really wonderful and unimaginable! As a newbie, I even stop practicing if I feel a little unconscious. And the other tragedy is “Peg” Woffington’s story when she played “Madly Loved” by David Garrick, check this out…

“Although ill, she disregarded her feelings to face a brilliant audience and managed to struggle through the performance, feeling worse and worse as the play progressed. Nevertheless, she played delightfully until the fifth act, almost breaking down when she came to the lines in the epilogue:

"If it be true that good wine needs no bush, 'tis true that a good play needs no epilogue, etc."

The collapse came when she arrived at the familiar passage:

"If I were a woman, I would kiss as many of you as had beards that pleased me."

As she struggled with these lines, her voice gave out and she was completely overcome. With the mournful cry of, "Oh God! Oh God!" She staggered to the wings where she fell unconscious.” (RENÉ WREN, PLAYERS WHO DIED ACTING: 50-62).

What a brave actress she is. Even she could give her last message to the audience on the stage. Things like this usually forgotten by people or just say that people now just judge an actor by his performance or his act, not the story behind it. In the other hand we can see Peg is all in all out for her performance, she sacrifice anything, include her life to save the play when she is dying. Furthermore, the show must go on, right?

The next story will be about a performance era. This era is not the classic one or the modern one. This era of performance is in the Nazi era. Yes, as what you are thinking now, this story has relation with the concentration camps. Is there anyone of you has once imagined that there is a play performance in the concentration camps? I neither has imagine about that too. But, here is the summary of the story that I read.

“There are two big concentration camps in Germany, they are Dachau and Buchenwald. In Dachau there are approximately 10000 prisoners live there. The discipline on the camp is strict, even the performers have to perform inside the hut, hide and seek with the officer there. Yes, this concentration camp have performances even have a well known actor there, he is Paul Morgan, he died from lungs inflammation. In this camp if we caught acting, we must escape from the hut by jump out of the doors or the windows to avoid the officers in command. And the second camp is in Buchenwald. This camp has approximately 25000 prisoners, much more then in the Dachau. The difference from the Dachau is here we can act or perform freely. Most performance here based on the true story. Even sometimes the story is about the officer of that camp too. This camp could have 2-4 performances per day when holding a show. Again I wanted to say, amazing and unbelievable! So, let say when a performer performs something this night it is possible to find him dead tomorrow by the toxic gas. It is happened in the concentration camp. Ironic and tragic, isn’t it? Even this story is prohibited to publish before the horror of the holocaust reveal to the world.” (CURT DANIEL, THEATRE IN THE GERMAN CONCENTRATION CAMPS).

That was some storied I wanted to share about the life in the theatre. Some of you maybe amazed but some of you maybe frightened and I am sure none of you have ever imagine about that things that happened in the theatre. Ironic and tragic, aren’t they? So at least as a devotee we should appreciate the performers from many side, not only when they are act at the stage, because actually the real act is there, behind the stage. You must be ever heard about this sentence, the rehearsal or the practice is the real performance, it is better then than the performance itself. Why it is happen? It is because when the actor is rehearsing they act as what they want or as the script wants without thinking about the audience but when it comes to the stage, the top priority of the actor is the audience he has. So, do not appreciate a show only at the stage but also appreciate the process and the stories behind them.

AMAZING ART

Art is a very popular word in the world. Many people know well about art. They said that art is very unique and interesting. But, not all of people in the world know about the definition of art. Actually, the definition of art, as stated by Ronnie Burkett (2207), is that "Art is the personal contribution to the ever continuing conversation about life." Art has two main functions, like motivated function, non-motivated function. In motivated function, art is interpreted as a medium of communication. Unlike, in motivated function, art in non-motivated function is interpreted as a medium of religious. Nowadays, there are six kinds of arts that are very famous, like body piercing, classical music, abstract art, oil painting, origami, and juggling.

Body piercing is one of the six types of art that is very famous. Besides that, body piercing also has two major benefits, such as supporting appearances, and facilities for prayer or religious. Not everyone likes body piercing. Only people who have big willingness and courage can do this action. There are some body piercings’ tools that are very rare and expensive, like piercing needle, indwelling cannula, dermal punch, piercing gun, cork, forceps, needle receiving tubes, and anaethesia. Piercing needle has a lot of kinds, like medical needle, straight needle, and curved needle. These piercing needle’s kinds must be inserted in the body that will be pierced. Unlike, piercing needle, indwelling cannula just used in some moments because, it produces more blood. So, the piercer not always uses this tool. Actually, dermal punch, piercing gun, cork, forceps, needle receiving tubes, and anaethesia are the most important tools because they are the main tools that must be used.

Unlike body piercing that needs big willingness and courage, classical music needs our soul and our mind. Classical music has one important function that is very closely related to our lives. Classical music can be used as a stimulant for the children’s brain growth. And, this can be done since the children still in the womb. Besides that, classical music also can be used to train children’s discipline. There are some classical music’s tools that are very important for the classical musician, like piano, cello, classical guitar, and tambourine. Piano is the most difficult instrument. It is divided into piano concerto, piano sonata, piano trio, piano quintet, and solo piano. Unlike piano, cello needs special skills, like left hand technique, and right hand technique. It also has some sizes that are very various. And, the last two instruments are the additional instrument. So, not all of the classical musician use this instrument.

Abstract art is one kind of paintings that is very popular. And, it becomes popular because of its functions. Abstract art has some functions, like improve people’s ability to solve their problems, increase people’s creativity, improve people’s ability to manage their times, money, and their activities. Besides that, it also can improve the function of people’s right brain. Not just that, abstract art can becomes a tool to channel people’s feelings and dreams. Like another arts, abstract art also needs some tools, like canvas, roller, brush, rags, and faux-finishing tool. Canvas is the main tool in abstract art because canvas is the media to draw the picture. And, the next tool is roller that also becomes the main tool. Roller is used to coloring the picture that has big shape. Unlike canvas and roller, that becomes the main tool, brush, palette, rags, and faux-finishing tool are falsifies tools because all of these tools are used when the painting in the completion stage.
The next famous type of arts is oil painting. Many people in this world like oil painting. They like oil painting because with oil painting they can share about their feelings and their talent. Besides that, many people in this world like oil painting because it is drowning with details that help the audience to know and understand about the meaning of paintings. Oil painting also needs some tools, like wooden panel, paper, slate, pressed wood, and cardboard. Wooden panel has the same function with canvas. But, the difference is wooden panel used to draw a picture with oil. So, wooden panel cannot be used in abstract art. Unlike abstract art that does not need sketches, oil painting is one kind of arts that need them. And, we can use paper to draw the sketches. The last three things are optional tools because they are used in ancient time and now they are replaced by modern tools, like wooden panel, and paper.

Origami is an amazing and unique art because with origami we can get a lot of new things, like we can train our patience, our left brain function and our hand speed. Besides that, with origami we can enlarge our knowledge about Japanese national culture because in there every origami has its own function and meaning. For example, when Japanese people have weeding party they use origami butterflies because origami butterflies reflect the bride and the groom. Like another arts, origami also needs some tools, like origami paper, bone folder, paper clip, tweezers, ruler, scissors, and origami book. There are five major tools in origami, like bone folder, paper clip, tweezers, ruler, and origami book. We use bone folder, paper clip, and tweezers when we want to make small folds. And, ruler will helps us to get appropriate and accurate size. Origami book helps us get examples of forms that we will create.

The last famous type of arts is juggling. Nowadays, there are a lot of shows that use juggling, like circus, medieval fairs, and children’s birthday party. Besides that, juggling can be performed in street, theatre and the others. Juggling is one kind of arts that has some functions, like improve our brain function, train our hand abilities and our hand speed. Like we know, all people in this world have brain. And, juggling is one example of tools that can increase brain’s function because, with juggling human’s visual-motor part in their brain will work faster. Besides that, with juggling we can train our hand abilities and our hand speed. It is because we must catch the ball in the appropriate time. And, if we do not have good hand abilities and speed, we cannot do that. Actually, juggling is one kind of art that is very simple, because it does not require a lot of equipments. Juggling just needs hand abilities, juggler’s concentration and ball.

As we can see, art has a lot of various things, like the functions of art, the examples of art, the popularities of art, and the others. The six kinds of arts that are very famous, like body piercing, classical music, abstract art, oil painting, origami, and juggling are one example of art’s things. On body piercing, we can get two major advantages, like support our appearances, and facilities for prayer. Body piercing has some tools, like piercing needle, indwelling cannula, dermal punch, piercing gun, cork, forceps, needle receiving tubes, and anaethesia. And, in classical music we can stimulate children’s brain growth, and train children’s discipline. Piano, cello, classical guitar and tambourine are the examples of classical music’s tools. Abstract art has some functions, like improve people’s ability to solve their problems, increase people’s creativity, improve people’s ability to manage their times, money, and their activities. Besides that, it also can improve the function of people’s right brain. There are some tools that are important for abstract art, like canvas, roller, brush, rags, and faux-finishing tool. The next famous type of art is oil painting. In oil painting, we can get some benefits, like share our feelings and talent. Besides that, we can know and understand about the meaning of paintings. Wooden panel, paper, slate, pressed wood, and cardboard are the tools in oil painting. Next is origami. Origami has some functions, like train our patience, our left brain function and our hand speed. Besides that, with origami we can enlarge our knowledge about Japanese national culture. And, there are some tools in origami, like bone folder, paper clip, tweezers, ruler, and origami book. The last example of famous type of art is juggling. In juggling, we can improve our brain function, train our hand abilities and our hand speed. Unlike other examples of art that needs a lot of equipment, juggling just needs hand abilities, juggler’s concentration and ball.
